"Therefore, we started upon a personal inventory. This was Step Four. A business which takes no regular inventory usually goes broke. Taking a commercial inventory is a fact-finding and a fact-facing process. It is an effort to discover the truth about the stock-in-trade. One object is to disclose damaged or unsalable goods, to get rid of them promptly and without regret. If the owner of the business is to be successful, he CANNOT fool himself about values." 12 step program groups criticism ...
Recently came across some situations that can give a bad idea of the 12 step help group spirit. Having said this, it is also important to remember that people make groups , eventhough the group has an influence on the individual... Recaling the first tradition, where we came across the important concept that individual recovery depends on the group unity, every individual is responsable (or not) to practice the principles of the steps. At the end of the day, each one knows what it is being done (or not) ...

"Fact-based story of top fashion model Gia Marie Carangi follows her life from a rebel working in her father's diner at age 17 to her death in 1986 at age 26 from AIDS, one of the first women in America whose death was attributed to the disease. In between, she followed a downward spiral of drug abuse and failed relationships. Summary written by John Sacksteder IN IMDB.PRO"
December 9 - "Living a Clean Life"
"When we talk about being clean and sober , we are not talking about any kind of trance, ectasy or high. We are not talking about the aloof, alienated thinker who withdraws from society. Nor are we talking about the rigid , unbending one who screams for temperance. The sobriety and cleanness we are talking about is living today well.
We enjoy our children and friends, live life to the fullest and are engaged in many activities. Some of us are great lovers, husbands, wives or leaders. We all at times, suffer anguish and doubt. No we are not drawn away from life, but to it. Am I living today well?
Lord let my love of the world shine forth from the irresistible burning love of God.
My plan for living today well is:
God help me to stay clean and sober today!"
A Choice of Words (important ones...). GOD versus GOOD
When/if having difficulties believing in God, it would be important making an effort believing in GOOD. Most of the people that refuse to believe in God, most of the times, tend to think about established ideas of the concept. It is possible to create ones particular concept (God concept) that suits us best.
Is addiction a choice or a disease?
Is addiction a choice or a disease? Does somebody have the choice of being an addict or not being an addict? That sounds like a silly question.
After all, who would want all of the misery and suffering that comes as a consequence of addiction? Still, depending on your own point of view, choice may play an important part in living the life of an addict. ENTER SITE

Primeiro aniversario dia 22/10/2010
Vamos continuar.
It's been a while... Passou algum tempo
It's been a while since I published in this blog... I am sorry. Truly sorry, but it's how it goes... When I started I "promised" I would do it daily, a bit like the 12 step program and its moto: "one day at the time"... Well let's start publishing then, and eventualy, just for today, I will publish as many posts as I have never published before... (in one day).

Step 10
How It Works
This thought brings us to Step Ten, which suggests we continue to take personal inventory and continue to set right any new mistakes as we go along. We vigorously commenced this way of living as we cleaned up the past. We have entered the world of the Spirit. Our next function is to grow in understanding and effectiveness. This is not an overnight matter. It should continue for our lifetime. Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them. We discuss them with someone immediately and make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone. Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help. Love and tolerance of others is our code. -A.A. Big Book p.84

Therapeutic Movies V - "My name is Joe" (1998)
My Name Is Joe is a 1998 Scottish film directed by Ken Loach. The film stars Peter Mullan as Joe Kavanagh, an unemployed recovering alcoholic in Glasgow who meets and falls in love with a health visitor. David McKay plays his troubled friend Liam. The film's title is a reference to the ritualized greeting performed in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, as portrayed in the film's opening scene.
The movie was mainly filmed in the council estates of Glasgow and filling small roles with local residents, many of whom had drug and criminal pasts. The natural Scottish accents of some of the actors are unfamiliar to most American television viewers and as such the film is often shown subtitled.
The film won awards in many film festivals, including Best Actor for Mullan at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.[1]

Thought of the Day
The more a diamond is cut, the more it sparkles. —Anonymous
There is something of value to be found even in the worst of things. Consider the oyster. When a grain of sand penetrates an oyster's shell, it irritates the oyster, making it uncomfortable. The oyster relieves the pain by coating the sand with a soothing liquid. When this liquid hardens, a pearl is formed. The very process that healed the oyster creates a precious jewel for others to cherish and admire. The way in which we deal with our own frustrations - painful though they may be - can make a difference. Pearls can be formed from our experiences, making us wiser and stronger, or grains of sand - anger, bitterness, resentment--can remain imbedded inside us. The choice is ours. How can I turn my irritations into pearls today?

An Introduction to Seasonal Affective Disorder
John M. Grohol, Psy.D.
11 Nov 2003
Winter depression (or winter blues) is a common affliction for those who live in our northern climate. Its clinical name is seasonal affective disorder (or SAD) and up to 5% of the population (especially in northern states) may suffer from it. Seasonal affective disorder is characterized by feelings of sadness and depression that occur in the winter months when the temperatures drop and the days grow short. The depression is often associated with excessive eating or sleeping and weight gain and has occurred for both the past 2 years. Women are twice to three times more likely to suffer from the winter blues than men.
There are many effective treatments for winter depression, some of which you can do to help yourself. Increasing your daily exposure to as much natural light as possible can be helpful to many. Any time that you have the opportunity to gain access to more sunlight in the winter months, you should try to do so. Taking a walk throughout the day (even if you don't normally do so), sitting next to a south-facing window at your office, in a classroom, or at home will increase your sunlight exposure. Exercising next to a window or outdoors (when possible) is another activity that can help.
Although it may be difficult to do, maintaining your schedule and lifestyle will help to keep the depression at bay. A regular pattern of sleep is the most important thing to maintain. It may be helpful, for instance, to have your bedroom lights on a timer to turn on a half-hour before you wake. This may help in waking at a regular time every morning, when it is still dark outside in the winter months.
Light therapy has shown to be an effective treatment for seasonal affective disorder. While you can purchase expensive, specialized light therapy lighting fixtures for your home or office, some inexpensive alternatives are also available. Another lighting technique to try is to replace commonly used light bulbs in your home with brighter full spectrum (also known as broad spectrum) light bulbs. While more expensive than regular light bulbs, these bulbs provide light that is similar to natural sunlight.
If none of these techniques seem to help your depressive symptoms, you should consider consulting your family physician or a mental health professional. The winter blues are a form of depression and can be readily treated with medications or psychotherapy when other self-help methods aren't effective. Don't be afraid to talk about this condition with a professional, it's nothing to be ashamed or afraid of. With a little effort, the winter blues can be beaten.

O W do HOW...
Day by Day...
O QUE É ESTAR EM RECUPERAÇÃO - I THE MEANING OF RECOVERY - I
What is Recovery? What is a Recovering Addict supose to do? This questions can be answered in several different ways, nevertheless, I believe that 5 main characteristics should be present in a Recovering Addict Life Style:

1 - Abstinence from mood altering behaviou and/or substance.
2 - Going regularly to 12 Steps Meetings.
3 - Beeing involved in Service at those 12 Step Meetings.
4 - Work the Steps (written).
5 - Having a commitment with a Sponsor (or eventually Psychotherapist).
Therapeutic Movie VI - "Postcards from the Edge"
A Mike Nichols Film (1990) - Substance-addicted Hollywood actress Suzanne Vale is on the skids. After a spell at a detox centre her film company insists as a condition of continuing to employ her that she live with her mother Doris Mann, herself once a star and now a champion drinker. Such a set-up is bad news for Suzanne who has struggled for years to get out of her mother's shadow, and who finds her mother still treats her like a child. Despite these problems - and further ones to do with the men in in her life - Suzanne can begin to see the funny side of her situation, and it also starts to occur to her that not only do daughters have mothers, mothers do too.
Therapeutic Movie V - "Clean and Sober"
1988 - A Film by Glenn Gordon Caron in which Michael Keaton plays Daryl Poynter, a hot shot real estate agent who just happens to have a cocaine and drinking problem. One morning, he wakes up to find a dead woman in his bed(someone he had been partying with the night before)from a cocaine overdose. He also just happenes to recieve a phone call from his employers telling him a huge sum of money is missing from one of his accounts. Panicing, Daryl decides to check into a drug rehab to hide from the law, where he meets tough cookie Morgan Freeman. A recovering addict himself, he now works as a drug counselor, and knows all the tricks Daryl tries to pull. Soon Daryl discovers he just might be in the right place, afterall.

DREAMS
What's going on whilst we sleep? What are we thinking, experiencing (emotionally)? DREAMS... what an interesting issue...
"Your Song"
It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live
If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world
I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on
So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

Therapeutic Movie IV - "Requiem for a Dream"
Director: Darren AronofskyRelease Date: 27 October 2000 (USA)

"We see it happening among us every day This miraculous turnabout is evidence of a spiritual awakening"
Basic Text p. 51
We watch them walk in to their first meeting defeated, their spirits broken. Their suffering is obvious, and their desire for help even more apparent. They collect a welcome chip and go back to their seats, shaken by the effort.
We see them again, and they seem a little more comfortable. They've found a sponsor and are attending meetings every night. They still won't meet our glance, but they nod their heads in recognition as we share. We notice a spark of hope in their eyes, and they smile uncertainly when we encourage them to keep coming back.
A few months later, they are standing straight. They've learned how to make eye contact. They're working the steps with their sponsor and are healing as a result. We listen to them sharing at meetings. We stack chairs with them afterward.
A few years later, they are speaking at a convention workshop, They've got a wonderful, humorous personality. They smile when they see us, they hug us, and they tell us they could never have done it without us. And they understand when we say, "nor could we, without you."

"SELF-WILL RUN RIOT"
This phrase comes from chapter 5 of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous,
“Selfishness- self-centeredness! That, we think, is the root of our troubles…. So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making. They arise out of ourselves, and the alcoholic is an extreme example of self-will run riot, though he usually doesn’t think so. Above everything, we alcoholics must be rid of this selfishness. We must, or it kills us!”
The only solution we know is to work the 12 Steps.

O Decimo Segundo Passo
Falar acerca deles. Admitir que existem, falar sobre o que sente nesse momento (apetecia-me beber um copo, apetecia-me ir ao casino, apetecia-me cheirar cocaina, apetecia-me comprar alguma coisa..., etc). Sobretudo pensar: O FACTO DE TER VONTADE DE FAZER ALGO NÃO SIGNIFICA QUE TENHA DE O FAZER. POSSO E CONSIGO CONTRARIAR-ME!
